How to prevent wormy apples The single most important action a gardener can take to prevent wormy apples is to clean up all fallen apples before they become rotten. Do not allow apples to rot on the ground, as the worms will crawl from the apple into the ground and lay thousands of eggs which will become the worms which will ruin next summer’s apples.
If worms have been a problem in the past, it is suggested that you spray with a fruit tree spray. The labels on the sprays generally suggest spraying more often than is necessary. We find that spraying every two weeks beginning when the small apples show the first tint of red, and ending two weeks before they are harvested can prevent worms. This is not that long a time, and usually means only three or four sprays.
