Dogs and Cats
Male dogs do damage to arbor vitea and junipers by urinating on them. Dog urine is so high in nitrogen that it burns what it touches. A small tree can die from the damage of dog urine. Placing a small fence around the base of the tree can make it inconvenient enough for the dog so they will go somewhere else. Once the shrub is large enough so the bulk of the foliage is out of harm’s way the problem diminishes, although any evergreen foliage dog urine does touch is likely to burn.

Dog urine can burn spots in the lawn, or create green patches of vigorous grass. Irrigating heavily can lessen, but not cure, this problem.

Dogs and cats can damage all plantings, if they are so inclined. There is no easy way to change the habits of a dog or a cat. If you plant where they are used to sleeping, or digging, they will not change. There is no foolproof chemical spray to use to keep dogs and cats at bay.

Cats hate crinkly plastic. Some people have kept cats off their window boxes by hanging plastic nearby.
