Helping your trees and shrubs prepare for winter
Do nothing which encourages growth late in the season. Do not trim in late summer when there still is the potential for a tree or shrub to send out the tender new growth in response to being cut back. Do not fertilize late in the summer. Hold off on watering as plants approach dormancy in the fall. Plants use far less water after Labor Day. Fresh, green growth late in the season is unlikely to harden up in time to make it through the winter.
