The importance of location, location, location
It is difficult to over emphasize the importance of location to plants. Determining the best plant for a certain location requires that one consider sunshine, available space, the eventual size of the plant, moisture and soil, as well as the obvious question of appearance.

With annuals and perennials, one can experiment with various locations without risking much money. If an annual doesn’t work in one place one year, try it in another the next year. Most perennials can easily be moved if it turns out they aren’t right for a location.

Some gardeners plant annuals in pots and move them around their yard to discover where they do best before building a flower bed in that spot. There is often no telling what causes a plant to do well or poorly. Subtle changes in location can make a difference. Dedicated gardeners experiment with different flowers in different parts of the yard.

Trees and shrubs are more permanent, and more expensive than annuals and perennials. Before planting a tree or shrub, make sure to give thought to finding a good spot. Planting a tree or shrub in a bad location means losing time and money. Not only is your effort planting the tree wasted, but you have to figure out how to pull the thing out, and then start over with something better.
