No islands in the yard! As a rule, plantings should be concentrated around the house and the edges of the yard, where the plants can be tucked in most naturally. An island of shrubs planted in the middle of the front yard can make a house look more like the local branch of a bank than a home.
Islands of annual or perennial flowers can be spectacular, but should only be resorted to after other more natural places have been filled. The place for stand-alone beds of flowers is off to the side or near the vegetable garden, somewhere where they don’t look as if they are on stage. A flower bed can be beautiful, but like a beautiful piece of furniture, it looks best if it fits into the broad scheme of things.
Of course, at Bergeson Gardens, we ignore this design principle and put islands of flowers everywhere. |
