Avoid rows in the yard
Unless you are planning a hedge, it is best if the plantings in one’s yard are random and natural-looking. Rows are for sugar beets, windbreaks, and soldiers. The whole idea behind planting trees and shrubs in one’s yard is to soften the lines to make the place look more natural.

Gardeners who attempt to establish a perfectly uniform row of trees, evergreens, or shrubs in their yard are usually frustrated. Soil and moisture conditions vary every few feet in most yards, which causes trees from one end of the row to the other to grow at different rates. When trees are planted randomly, the loss of one tree will not create an unsightly gap. Trees which grow more slowly won’t stick out like a sore thumb.
