Common Name : Astilbe
Latin Name : Astilbe Description : Astilbe are one of the very few perennials hardy in our area which bloom where shade prevails. Astilbe can withstand sunshine, but must have moist soil. Growing astilbe in a raised bed of peat in medium shade is ideal. Also called “false spirea” due to a leaf which is similar to the dwarf spirea, the astilbe sends plume-like bloom stalks above the foliage. The blooms can last for much of the summer, and colors include pink, white, lavender and red. If planted in raised beds, Astilbe are perfectly hardy in our area. They must not sit moist over winter. Astilbe are not very common in gardens in our area, but they should be planted more often. Dozens of varieties are on the market, ranging from ranging from one to three feet in height. Deadheading astilbe blooms will not bring about a new bloom, but getting rid of the old bloom will allow the attractive foliage to show for the remainder of the season. |
