RED SPLENDOR
FLOWERING CRAB
Introduced by Melvin Bergeson in 1948 after it was discovered growing
in a row of seedlings by nursery employee Norris Ofstedal, the Red
Splendor remains one of the best-selling ornamental trees in the Upper
Midwest. Melvin named the tree "Red Splendor" because of
its habit of hanging onto its fruit. In the late fall and early winter,
the fruit produces a dazzling red display. Once named the outstanding
new plant introduction in Minnesota, the Red Splendor was included
in gifts President Richard Nixon brought to the Chinese in his historic
visit to China in 1972. |
